DOVE’s Community Advocacy Training is a one-night virtual event which is open to the Vashon Island community. Included in this training will be a brief look at privilege and oppression which provides an important foundational understanding of the backdrop behind which interpersonal violence occurs. We will introduce bystander intervention skills and provide a space for in-depth conversation about how we as a community can step in and step up to affect change when violence is occurring. We will also outline how to support healthy relationships with our families, friends, and the larger island community, while learning how to cultivate skills for empathetic and reflective listening when holding space for people potentially struggling with interpersonal violence issues. We will explore basic definitions of gender-based violence and examine the elements of power and control within a relationship. We will tackle the tricky questions of "What do I do when I don't know what to do?" and "What is the best way for me to help here?" Ultimately, our goal is to create a safe container for conversation around how to be a good neighbor to our fellow islanders and reflect on how we can support each other with the shared understanding that Safety Belongs to All of Us.
Join DOVE staff members Rashaun Renggli, LMFT and Nyn Grey as they explore how to be an overall awesome community advocate. Both are trained in community advocacy, group facilitation and community engagement. The rich and robust conversation between participants at Rashaun and Nyn’s previous workshop greatly enhanced the potency of the experience and knowledge shared, and they are eager to share this evening with you.
