Domestic Violence prevention is a cornerstone of DOVE’s work.

The ultimate goal of education about youth violence is to stop teen dating violence before it begins. During the preteen and teen years, young people are learning the skills they need to form positive, healthy relationships with others, and it is an ideal time to promote healthy relationships and prevent patterns of teen dating violence that can last into adulthood.

Teen Council

Teen Council (TC) is a national award winning youth peer education program developed and tested by Planned Parenthood. It is also a pilot project of The DOVE Project in that DOVE’s Teen Council is the first non-Planned Parenthood run TC in the United States. 3 years into our Vashon DOVE TeenCouncil, another SA/DV agency on the eastside of the state has also expanded to have a PEI (peer education institute) TC and we hope there are more, as WSCADV and WCSAP have been hosting workshops for our state networks to endorse the program.

Teen Council sits at the middle of three intersecting spheres: public health (prevention), social change, and healthy sexuality. Teen Council members create social change through advocacy and in their schools and communities. The work they do helps build a healthier community.

The Teen Council program was chosen because it has promising results over its thirty-year history within 35 TCs in 13 states; preliminary results of a three-year evaluation have shown that it has a significant effect on changing attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs. A recent study on friends/acquaintances of Teen Council members indicated some pretty interesting outcomes:

  • 96% reported that they are more likely to seek clear consent in intimate situations
  • 93% are more likely to use protection because of what they learned from their TC friend
  • 4 out of 5 teens received information about consent, STIs, and myths about sex
  • 63% were taught proper condom use

In June 2016, six members of the Vashon Teen Council were interviewed and selected. The objectives for the Teen Council members include:

  • To increase sexual health knowledge
  • Affect attitudes and beliefs
  • Reduce sexual risk taking, increase self-esteem
  • Increase communication between partners about sexuality
  • Increase comfort and confidence with decisions.

Visit the Vashon Teen Council website, and find out more about what they are currently working on.
